Economic activity is diversified and varied like the landscape. As in the rest of the Ain department, industry is quite present, yet the Bugey is also proud of its agricultural vocation which benefits from a thriving food industry and a large tertiary sector.
The main poles of employment are Belley, Culoz, Hauteville-Lompnès and Briord. After the recession of the 80s the Bugey showed remarkable flexibility and responsiveness, as a consequence activity picked up faster there than in the rest of the Ain department and Rhône-Alpes. The economic vitality of the region is illustrated for example by the unemployment rate which is well below the national statistics. Bugey also benefits from a solid industrial sector.
