The tertiary sector employs 4 700 people 16% work in the health sector- which is much more than the national average. The main center of activity is located in Hauteville-Lompnès where the first sanatorium in France was inaugurated in 1897. This major health activity pole leads an ambitious development policy turned toward sports and functional re-education.
The food sector is also an important activity that relies upon local agricultural resources. The cheese making industry is predominant but wine producing has also contributed to the reputation of the Bugey region. Over half the vintages in the area are "appellation contrôlée" (guaranteed vintages). Wine growing covers over 1350 acres for an annual production of 25000 hectoliters.
